C. F. Arcier – Silesian Folk Tales
These images are taken from the book Silesian Folk Tales; (The Book of Rubezahl), by James Lee & James T. Carey. Published in 1915 by the American Book Company of New York, it was illustrated by an unkown artist by the name of C.F. Arcier. It appears that this fantastic artist remained unkown as I have been unable to find out any information about them online – there is no reference to any further work, their life or any other books illustrated by them! The style of pen & ink line drawing is typical of the period and is similar to many better known contemporaries.
Whilst this artist remains something of a mystery I think this work is definitely worth showcasing here. If you know anything about this illustrator please leave a comment. Click the thumbnails for full size or view all 16 images from the bookthe images at my Flickr photo stream (all full size images are 300 dpi).

Steve,
I’m enjoying this process very much, and have sold my first cd of digital books! I’m very excited about this. I have an idea for using images on cd, but I have a question. There are some images that seem rather obvious they are in the public domain – like Van Gogh, for instance. However, I am ignorant of how to find out if an image is in the public domain. Are all artworks created before 1922 also in the public domain, or is it more complicated than that? How do I find out?
Thanks so much for your help!
-Sue
Hello Steve,
I don’t know any other way to contact you, so I hope you monitor this site.
I have your book $50 a day acution, but can’t get any of the videos to play. GREAT book by the way!!
David
Steve, I appreciate your book and videos on Public Domain.I’m having a problem getting downloaded PDF’s into a program that allows me to do the editing part. What program is it that you are using to do the editing part in your video’s ?
Thanks !
Glen
Hi Glen
I use Nitro PDF
Hi
The links to the videos are on the download / thankyou page
Hi Sue
The same rules apply for images as for books so for works published in the USA for example anything pre 1923 is public domain
Steve,
I just saw your answer to my question! Thank you so much for this!
Beautifully detailed illustrations Steven, well done finding them, and they are all in the public domain, so available for anyone to enjoy.
John
Hi Steve,
Just accessed your blog via the JT Masterclass blog inserts. Wow! You really know your stuff. Fantastic blog articles and knockout illustrations. I have only just started the Masterclass programme, (into week
so am totally new to blogging. Having looked at your blogs, mine seem amateurish, but then JT does say in the early days, doesn’t matter what you write about as long as its original.Like many before me I fell for the ‘Make a million in 10 days’ sales gimmicks and am now starting to realise its all hype. Have downloaded your Public Domain Profits which I think is brilliant and will be subscribing to your $50 a day Auction Challenge.
Thanks again for great content and great ideas
Hey Steve,
First of all I know little about illustrations but looking at the quality of the ones you beautifully potrait I`m not surprised in the slightest that marketers like you and Avril Harper are so successful in the public domain niche on eBay1
I believe its one of the most powerful and lucrative niches in the ‘collectables’ market, interesting, you certainly know your illustrationns Steve….Ed.
Steve,
I have been creating cds again this month. In my most recent listings, I can’t get the images to appear in the listing. I have them hosted on photobucket. I am following the steps outlined in your video, and it looks like they are there as I create the listing, but once it goes live on ebay, the images are gone. Do you have any idea how I can overcome this?
Thanks so much!
Sue
Steve, I bumped into your site by accident and I am going to buy the $39 book. I’m not sure if it is just downloaded and I can see it anytime I want, or do I lose it after a period of time? Can it be printed?
I tried to download the illustrations by C.F. Arcier. It didn’t work. If they are public domain, why didn’t it work?
I am very happy with your site and am going to set up an account with ebay and try my hand at antique illustrations because I’m an illustrator and have interest in the old illustrator’s work. Especially children’s books. thanks for your info.
