Slideshows for eBay

Today I have been experimenting with the possibility of using a slideshow to display my images for an eBay listing. The reason I wanted to do this was that I have a new listing planned (a collection of books on the 1893 World’s Fair, Chicago) and I saved around 50 images to choose from for the listing. Having trouble deciding which to ditch (they were all great so couldn’t decide!) and,  having seen someone else using them, got me to thinking about slideshows.

The advantage of these are:

  • You can display many images in the same space as one
  • They are easy to create
  • They’re free
  • They look cool!

I had a go at it on Photobucket – its practically foolproof. All you do is choose your images and select a style for yourshow, click save and it is done. Photobucket generates a direct link (ie a web page) for your show and a code which you paste in to the html of you eBay listing / blog / site or wherever. This one features illustrations from vintage children’s books. These illustrations are some of my all time favourites – they exemplify the brilliance of the ‘Golden Age‘ illustrators for me and I think they look really effective in this slideshow:

The only possible drawback of using these shows is that they require Flash to
display them and there will be some people who don’t have this installed and
so, won’t be able to see it. When creating listings for eBay, this where you need
to strike a balance – you want your listing to look as professional and impressive
as possible but you need to bear in mind that not everyone has super fast
broadband which will quickly load pages with large amount of graphics /
images or video / audio. A careful balancing act is needed.

  1. Hi Steven

We have such a similar focus (public domain) except you are waaaay ahead of me in terms of product creation. I have to admit once I disappear into the public domain I get sidetracked by all the amazing stuff that’s there. Excellent post on the slideshow at photobucket. Such a great way to display the images and hold visitor interest, especially for those who no longer scroll down pages!

Looking forward to your World’s Fair product … have you read The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson? Puts an interesting spin on the entire event and a great background to how the fair was designed and built.

  2. Hi Steven Love the pictures and the slideshow idea is great

  3. Hi, Steven good looking blog my own has lots of eBay related posts; my area of eBay is in the health and beauty market where I have power seller status. I also sell other items from a separate identity. Just stating to do the round robin of other blogs to see the ones that most closely match mine and make a post on each. Please feel free to drop by and have a look and maybe make a comment.
    Cheers
    Rob
