It took me a whole lot longer than I thought as I finished up going through the books page by page to rotate images (everything in landscape!) and some of them were 5-700 pages long.

Creating these listings can turn into something of an education as, inevitably, you end up learning stuff about the subject. Sometimes it interests you sometimes not, I found the scale and the legacy of this Fair fascinating

• Over 630 acres
• 200 classically inspired buildings built from scratch!
• 27 MILLION visitors – incredible, bearing in mind that the US population at the time was only 60 million

It’s a generally accepted fact amongst academics that the Euro influenced Classical / Renaissance styles were intended to show that the U.S. was the cultural heir to the best of what Europe had offered and the new power to be reckoned with in the world.

I’ve been wondering what actually happened to all of these buildings as nothing remains of them today, a bit of net research, and I learned that what wasn’t demolished was destroyed by fires resulting from riots in the wake of a railway strike. It seems difficult to comprehend that such a colossal event which had such a lasting impact was reduced to nothing and with very little left to commemorate it today.
